Welcome to an unforgettable day in the beautiful Scheltenpass mountains in the Bernese Jura! But we are not just here to admire the beauty of this area. We are here to actively contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. With combined forces and many helping hands, we clear certain areas of bracken by hand. In this way, we not only protect rare species, but also preserve the unique landscape of the Bernese Jura for future generations.
The bracken fern ( Pteridium aquilinum ) is found in the Jura mainly outside of the forest. This also applies to the dry meadows and pastures of national importance in Schelten (BE). The fern can spread on fallow grassland and gradually cover large areas. Other species can no longer grow in dense stands. Under optimal growing conditions, this fern can reach a height of up to three meters! Due to its toxicity, it is not eaten by grazing animals, which further encourages its spread.
Together we can curb the growth of the bracken fern and thus have a positive impact on this special area!
